John Baker


John Baker, Choir Clinician & North Clackamas Community Choir Director, received both his Bachelor and Masters of Music in Education from Western Oregon State College. On February 11, 1980 he stepped into the position as choir director at Rex Putnam High School located in Milwaukie, Oregon. This position he held for 32 years. During his tenure at Rex Putnam, the choral program consisted of six groups: A-Cappella Choir, Choralaires, Vocal Point, Kingsmen Chorus, Cantabile and Beginning Guitar. The A-Cappella Choir and Choralaires performed at state and regional ACDA Conventions as well as MENC state Conventions. In the spring of 2010, the A Cappella Choir was selected and honored to perform at the ACDA NW Regional Convention held in Seattle, WA. The following year, the choir was again honored to perform at the 2011 ACDA National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Music literacy is a trademark of Mr. Baker’s teaching. He has a Sight-Reading/Theory program which is used in many high schools and middle schools throughout the Northwest. Developing complete musicians is his passion.

Mr. Baker retired at the end of the 2011 school year. He has been a frequent clinician, adjudicator and choir retreat specialist around the Pacific Northwest. In the fall of 2008 he was festival clinician at the Bangkok International Choir Festival held in Bangkok, Thailand. Since retirement, he has spent more time consulting including honor choir conducting in Haines, Juneau, and Kenai, Alaska, Hamilton, Montana, Coos Bay, St. Helens, and Klamath Falls, Oregon. He has also worked retreats and festivals in Kelowna, BC, Whidby Island, WA, Tuscon, AZ, and Hermiston, OR.  In February of 2014, Mr. Baker started the North Clackamas Community Choir, a wonderful and welcoming group of people who love to sing!
